My biography.
Laura Stevens is a Contemporary Textile Artist living and working in Derbyshire. Her unique artwork is inspired by the rich and diverse Derbyshire countryside. Meadows and waterways, hedgerows and woodlands are sympathetically and evocatively represented. Experimenting with layering of fabrics, sheers and nets, worked over with stitching, beading and thread work results in a fascinating exploration of colour and texture, evoking real emotions.

My husband and I moved to the Peak District in 1997 after visiting the area on holiday. We fell in love with the Derbyshire countryside and people, moving up from the sunny south six months later. This has influenced me greatly in the direction of my work and has lead me to where I am today. I have developed my own unique style over the past 10 years after first being introduced to this unusual medium at King Alfred’s College, Winchester whilst studying fine art. I have always had a hand in the arts but over the past 10 years I have focused almost entirely on textiles. Through this medium I am able to express the depth of texture, impossible to achieve through other more traditional mediums such as paint. I have previously explored silver-smithing, pottery, painting, collage and wire sculpture as well as jewellery making which have all had their influenced on my individual style. I hope you enjoy viewing my work and will come and see them in the flesh!
